Giving Thanks To Our Coaches

Thank You to Life-time Tribesman and returning Head Coach Fred Gerkin who now enters his 5th Season as Tribe Elder.  Coach Fred has been with us since our inception, and was the recipient of "The Most Dedicated Tribesman" award for 2009.  Coach Fred's dauntless commitment, patience, and love for his players have allowed us a steady growth each and every season in every aspect including recruitment,
preparation, winning, and culture.

Coach Fred was surrounded for the first time this season with a full coaching staff, and was afforded the so very needed support to have garnished our successful 2009 campaign.  Thank You Coach Fred for your many years of selfless commitment and undying faith in your players.  We reluctantly look forward to your whistle blowing at February Mini Camp.

Thank You to Coach Khalid Merrit for your amazing passion and dedication this entire past season.  We were very fortunate to have Coach K come on board for the 2009 Season, and his commitment and efforts were an integral part of our great success this year.  Coach K committed to us for the 2009 season in March of this year, and he was at every single practice getting us prepared for each weekend battle.  Coach K has decided not to return to coach for us in our 2010 pursuit of championship, and he will be greatly missed.  Thank You Coach K for your dedication this entire season, and it has been good money having you with us.  Good luck to you and all that you pursue!

Thank You to Coach Andrew Calafates who as Tribe Line Coach for 2009 had brought for the first time ever, the sole attention to working with our linemen each and every week.  Coach AC has brought a work ethic and preparedness never afforded to the line before.  Allowing the linemen to understand their responsibilities on each play, and furthermore how to communicate and adjust to different defensive fronts, Coach AC was large in part of our progressing offensive output.  Coach AC returns to us for his his second season with the Tribe, and is the natural selection to lead us in 2010 as Tribe Offensive Coordinator.  Coach AC is already working hard at taking us forward with our new found momentum as a growing offensive output team to an equal contributor with our defense to retain our Long Island Title and beyond.

Thank You to Coach Michael Vecchione for your beloved leadership and outstanding defensive unit.  Coach Vecc has watched us for three seasons as a fan from the sidelines, and was well aware that we had great talent on the defensive side of the ball.  Coach Vecc had also witnessed first hand our lack of player depth, and the impossibility for Coach Fred to effectively coach alone.  Joining the Tribe for the first time this past season as Defensive Coordinator, Coach Vecc quickly gained the respect and confidence of all of his players.   With an unparalleled ability to inspire with or without words, Coach Vecc fielded the #1 defense on Long Island and one of the best defenses in the entire league allowing for our success in 2009.  Coach Vecc will be returning and once again leading Tribe Defense and it's command in 2010.

This past year, the Tribe had seen our most successful season to date, and we are truly grateful to all of our Coaches and all they had brought to the team.

Thank You Coach Fred, Coach K, Coach AC, and Coach Vecc for the Tribe 2009 Season, 8 Wins-2 Losses, and the Long Island Division Championship!

Tribe 15   Empire State Demon Knights 0

Tribe opened our 2009 Regular Season against a hardened and ambitious Demon Knights team.  The Demon Knights had just finished a very successful spring campaign, and the Tribe had finished the pre-season with a 1 -1 record.

The Demon Knights were simply not prepared for the balanced offensive attack and swarming defense of the Tribe.  The Tribe was able to generate a running game that controlled the tempo of the game, and every time the Demon Knights crossed into Tribe territory our defense shut them down.

Tribe showed the composure, determination, discipline, and focus necessary to win the opener by 15 points to a shut out.  We looked, acted, and behaved as a team, and in this type of football that comes out on top.  Our coaches have worked hard with our players to bring this group of talented individuals together as one unit.

We both meet again in several weeks, and it will be interesting to see if the Tribe can truly survive the rigors of the season.

Next week’s game against the Panthers continues our exercise on becoming one truly dominant force on Long Island.

6th Annual Long Island 2 Day Walk To Fight Breast Cancer

Shirley, New York

On Sunday June 7th, The Long Island Tribe participated in the 6th annual Long Island Two-Day Walk To Fight Breast Cancer, Inc.  (www.li2day.org), a dynamic group who raises awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island.  100% of the donations are distributed to grassroots service organizations of the Long Island Community.  The players and coaches volunteered at a rest stop/hydration station along the 15 mile route, where they had the opportunity to interact with and cheer on the walkers.  Realizing that Long Island has the highest incidence of Breast Cancer in the country, the guys freely volunteered their time and came out to show support.  Special thanks are extended to the Long Island Two Day Walk, Inc. especially Stephanie Grazer and Ellen Schreiber.

Tribe Kicks Off 2009 Season

The Tribe opened their 2009 season with a preseason game against the Brooklyn Bulldawgs. For a preseason game the level of play was exceptional.  Defense for both teams played at mid season form and both teams provided a game that demonstrated their professionalism.

The Tribe ended up with a +2 turnover ratio with interceptions by Sean Leonard in the second quarter, Anthony Vecchione in the third quarter, and a fumble recovery by Vinny Quaranta. Offensively they only had one interception. The offense was led by Lloyd Thompson who demonstrated the leadership, mental and physical toughness needed. The leading rusher was Ameen Murray with 65 yards rushing. Late in the fourth quarter with the Tribe behind and a fourth and a mile to go, Mike Salley stole an interception away from the defender for a first down keeping the drive alive.  After battling for 4 quarters the Tribe came up short on the score board with a 0-6 final.

The Head Coach’s comment was “These players acted, played, and behaved as a team. For the Tribe that is a win. Teams win championships, not individuals and these players are becoming a team. I am proud of each and every one of them and their efforts today.”

Tribe Stands In Fight For Breast Cancer

On Sunday June 8th, The Long Island Tribe participated in the 5th annual Long Island two-day walk to fight Breast Cancer.  The walk is organized by the Long Island two-day walk to fight Breast Cancer, Inc. (www.li2day.org), a dynamic group who raises awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island.  100% of the donations are distributed to grassroots service organizations of the Long Island Community.  The members of the team volunteered at a rest stop/hydration station along the 15 mile route, where they had the opportunity to interact with and cheer on the walkers.  The participants were as diverse as their reasons for being there, as some were survivors, some were well-wishers, and even some for whom the 15 mile walk was minuscule with the current challenges they face in chemotherapy, and or radiation therapy.  One young lady, Jessica, who had stopped at the Tribe's rest-stop defied all odds, and at times, relentless requests by the local EMT's to be driven to the finish line, all the while with Jessica saying, "I didn't endure surgery and chemo, only to be driven to the end...I'm walking it!"  What was more remarkable about her drive was the fact that she was only discharged from the hospital on Friday June 6th, and still had the hospital bands to prove it.  "These ladies out here are what heart and determination are all about, and so for the few hours out of my Sunday, it is a small sacrifice to keep them going", said Tribe Linebacker George Moran.  The enjoyment of the festivities on that day were not solely reserved for the walkers and volunteers, but even the fan favorite 'Crank', a beagle-terrier mix, owned by Tribe Defensive player and volunteer, Sean Leonard.  Special thanks are extended to the Long Island Two Day Walk, Inc., and especially Stephanie Grazer, and Ellen Schreiber.

Tribe Football Goes Beyond The End Zone

The Long Island Tribe, teamed up with the C.L.A.S. Foundation, administered by the Spence family, to pay a visit to the Pediatric Unit of Winthrop University Hospital on Saturday March 15th, 2008. The members of the team had an opportunity to spend some time with the kids, who were currently undergoing treatment.  The Tribe was able to provide the children with a little distraction, conversation, and tokens in the form of stuffed teddy bears with Tribe T-shirts, miniature footballs, and kids’ blankets. For all of the patients, from the youngest at 3 months to the oldest at 16 years of age, the experience was a positive one and mutually beneficial. “This is the first of many initiatives by the Tribe to contribute to the local community” said Tribe Executive Counsel. In a similar sentiment, “This was a feel-good day”, said team quarterback, Allen Robinson. The visit was led by Ms. Teresa Leoni, and was organized by the Coordinator of the hospital’s Child Life Center; Ann-Marie DiFrancesca, Chairman of the Pediatric Unit; Dr. J Stambouly, and Tribe General Manager; Chris Spence.

Making an uncomfortable stay, a slightly bit more comfortable, if not just for a short while.

As the Tribe grows, So does our RAFL

The Regional American Football League continued its massive growth today with the addition of five more quality football organizations. The New Jersey Warriors and the Jersey Shore Bulldogs, who played in the GSFL Post Season last year; a perennial power house in the New Jersey Terminators, The Empire State Titans, a 7-3 playoff team formerly of the EFA; and another staple of New Jersey, the Hudson County Stars all became official members of the RAFL for the 2008 season.

Great Strides in the 2008 Off-Season

A tremendous amount of hard work has been put into the 2007 Off-Season.  That hard work has already begun to pay huge dividends, and the 2008 Season looks much brighter than we could have possibly hoped for.  Some items worth mentioning are as follows.  The formation of our first Tribe Executive Counsel, the addition of three new coaches which now has us operating with a five man Coaching Staff, and our first Charter Membership to the most exciting Regional American Football League (RAFL).  The RAFL fields a national playing stage that will have its own National Championship Race along with the crowning of a TRUE Long Island Champion, as ALL Long Island Teams are housed within.  We have secured our first true Long Island home for both practices and games.  We have added many new players along with the retention of all veterans.  We have new philanthropic community projects already being planned, and an overall climate that just after two years in existence a New Era in Tribe Football is upon us.
